MOVEMENT POTENTIAL

BLUE SPINECHECKERYou should be curious about each and every one of your joints’ potential. I know this may sound like the opening to a marijuana horticulture book rather than from a Chiropractor, but as a movement specialist and enthusiast I’ve cross-pollinated into different modalities of movement over the past year and discovered some fascinating new insights…the most important being… optimizing the “potential of motion” of your joints and especially the spinal joints truly is a spiritual endeavor. Here’s what I mean.

In the past year my movement nutrition palate has exploded from hand balancing with Ido Portal’s crew…to becoming a beast, crab, scorpion, & ape with the Animal Flow peeps….to the human movement optimization FRC/ KINSTRETCH trainings with Dr. Andreo Spina and his ninja instructors… to another teacher training with alignment wizard and yoga physicist Alex Crow…to the weekly strength and conditioning programing by Danny Lesslie of Deuce Gym… to checking and adjusting the spines and extremities of the active lifestyle lovers of Los Angeles…and most importantly playing on the floor with my 6 and 3 year old nieces…..(wow that’s a huge run-on sentence).

My goal in studying with these masters of movement was to discover and uncover new ranges of motion and to increase my kinesthetic lexicon. After incorporating all of these different styles of movement into my personal holistic body-mind training program I began noticing some movement deficiencies along certain pathways that had remained dormant for years. This was absolutely fascinating as it gave me the opportunity to “clean-up” dysfunctional joints and weak/tight muscles. And let me tell you…When I find dysfunctional joints I approach the “clean-up” process targeted strategies like Harvey Keitel’s character Winston Wolf, “The Cleaner” from Pulp Fiction.

You need an optimal surplus of movement in order to move and perform. The problem is most people are living in deficit. They’re bankrupt in terms of motion and then they’re borrowing motion from other areas and that’s causing injury. And it’s not a matter of if they’re going to have a problem it’s a matter of when and how big.

When you improve the range of motion to your dysfunctional and deficient joints, watch how much better you move… …think… breathe…and  even relax. Probably the most important by-product of this work will be increasing your body’s innate ability to adapt to different stress loads. Your tissues won’t buckle. Your body won’t buckle. After all… it’s only when your tissues can’t handle the “stress load” that injuries happen.

I’m gonna warn you that this clean-up practice that emphases your movement foundation and fundamentals isn’t sexy when you watch the videos on Instagram or Facebook. What is attractive and sexy is you when you dedicate a portion of your “practice” to cleaning up your movement deficiencies to make sure you have the prerequisites to perform your movement demands so you can kick ass on the yoga mat, in the gym, on the surfboard, on the slackline, on the court, and most importantly at home.

So here’s the homework. Commit …

What Chiropractic Techniques are used at THE LIFE CENTER? The Brook Method

In order to customize the right technique for each person Dr. Jeremy Brook studied with several chiropractic masters. The list below is a brief explanation of the techniques he uses to adjust and correct one’s subluxations.

PALMER METHOD

This will involve any of a number of specific adjusting techniques, such as full spine, gonstead, & HIO, with the addition of a philosophy which emphasizes  the role of the Innate Intelligence of the body in the healing process.  It will not utilize any therapy other than hand adjustment.

THOMPSON

A specific technique for adjustment of the full spine on a special table which has a slight drop in the cushions to improve the effectiveness of the adjustment without as much force into the patient.

GONSTEAD

A specific method for full spine adjusting utilizing the use of full spine x-rays to locate spinal mis-alignments.

HIO — hole in one AKA Toggle Recoil

A specific adjustment of the upper cervical spine… the upper part of the neck, closest to the brain. This technique utilizes a side posture table with a cervical head piece which makes a slight drop when the adjustment is given.

MLS

Developed by my mentor Dr. Arno Burnier. It is an advanced technique that involves visulization, motion palpation, and advanced delicate adjusting.

MOTION ANALYSIS (PALPATION)

An examination procedure used to test the mobility of spinal joints by feeling for movement between the vertebra.

ACTIVATOR

It is a small had held impact tool in which a quick impulse is applied to correct a vertebral mis-alignment according to a set pattern.

LOGAN

A non-force technique taught by Logan Chiropractic College, which utilizes a soft steady pressure on ligaments around the tail bone for release of tension and vertebral mis-alignments in the lower back.…

THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF MOST PROBLEMS IS A POWER PROBLEM

The Vertebral Subluxation Complex is the underlying cause of many health problems.

Nervous System Function

When there is no interference, your nervous system controls the healthy function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body.

A subluxation, or the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, is a serious condition identified by its five parts:

* Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones:

(Spinal Kinesiopathology) The bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. This can restrict your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.

* Abnormal nervous system function:

(Neuropathophysiology) Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nervous system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body

* Abnormal muscle function:

(Myopathology) Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm.. The resulting scar tissue can change muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.

* Abnormal soft tissue function:

(Histopathology) A rise in temperature from an increase in blood or lymph supply can result in swelling and inflammation.. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear; or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.

* Abnormal function of the spine and body:

(Pathophysiology) Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints.. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to fail.

What’s the cause?

Subluxation, or more precisely, the Vertebral subluxation Complex, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position from stress, trauma or chemical imbalances.   Automobile collisions, improper lifting, drugs, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances, and long periods of sitting can all cause the Vertebral subluxation Complex.   Instead of just treating your symptoms, your chiropractor is primarily interested in detecting, reducing, and correcting the Vertebral subluxation Complex.…

Take the Power Back!

Greetings Friend,

Let’s get right to it….People want health. But health requires discipline. One of the main problems with our current health consciousness and health care system is that the majority of people take short cuts because they don’t want to do the work. Health takes effort and is a byproduct of being aligned with nature and all of its known and undiscovered laws.

Here’s the deal….come close….Health has been miserably taught and practiced for decades. People want it but have difficulty applying its simple principles because they don’t know where to begin. They are confused how to feed their bodies and minds.

We need to rehabilitate our heath care tradition to improve the transmission of life energy through our bodies and to the next generation. You see …the process of achieving and maintaining health can be transformational. To transcend we require alignment on all levels…physical, emotional, mental, social, financial, sexual, and psychic. Optimal alignment takes energy, discipline, and will power. With optimal alignment our bodies can adapt normally and efficiently to the flow of life around us.

The Life Center Chiropractic has a vision of health & wellness… and we stick close to it. We even have a manifesto to support our philosophy, science, and artistic expression.

Now if you are currently being served at our office…Thank you for allowing us to serve you! If you aren’t currently under chiropractic care and are interested in getting your spine checked, aligned and moving with grace and ease…give us call. We’d love to be your chiropractic home!

So until we see you in person… have a spectacular day!

Chiropractically Yours,

Dr. Jeremy Brook

P.S. Enjoy this music clip from Rage Against the Machine called Take the Power Back. If this doesn’t fire you up, it’s because of one of two things….#1. You hate hard rock or # 2. You hate hard rock. It fires me up….so I hope you get inspired by the song’s the raw energy! Be warned …. there are a couple bad words sprinkled throughout the song.

Kids Need Chiropractic Too!

Some of the most rewarding moments I’ve had in practice have occurred while taking care of children and especially newborns. I gotta tell you, the birth process is intense! The journey of the new baby  from a luxurious five star uterus into a stressful gravity based word places a tremendous and amazing toll on its spine. Especially at the top part of the neck where the brain and spinal cord come together.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that this area is supremely important in growth and development. That’s why it is essential to make sure your baby is “clear of interference” at this level for proper communication between the brain and body. If there is a subluxation at this level, LIFE cannot flow freely.

That’s why I’ve included a research  article from one of my pediatric instructions, Dr. Peter Fysh. I expect you will see the value of chiropractic care for your kids!

P.S.

That’s my little baby niece, Phoebe,  getting her atlas, the  upper most bone in the spine,  adjusted!

Suboccipital Strain in Newborns

By Peter Fysh, DC
The upper cervical spine and atlanto-occipital junction have been identified in previous studies as being the cause of a diversity of clinical findings affecting the newborn infant. This month we review a study by Biedermann in which suboccipital strain is identified as causing a variety of signs and symptoms in a group of 114 young infants.

The study, published in the Journal of Manual Medicine, not only identifies the signs and symptoms of the suboccipital strain syndrome, but also highlights the effectiveness of spinal adjustments in correcting the problem.1

Kinematic imbalances due to suboccipital strain, otherwise known as KISS syndrome, identifies the pathogenic potential of the craniovertebral junction to produce a constellation of clinical findings. From a group of 600 children, 114 were chosen for treatment and follow-up study. Their symptoms included restricted motion of the cervical spine, torticollis, cervical scoliosis, facial scoliosis, asymmetric muscle tone, retarded development of the hip joints, opisthotonos (retraction of the head and arching of the back, with infant unable to hold the head erect), deformities of the feet, restless sleep, and not eating or drinking well.

The most common findings were those of torticollis (head tilted to one side), scoliosis (sideways curve of the cervical spine), asymmetric muscle development, slow development of the hip joints and asymmetrical or slow development of motor skills.

The most common factors causing suboccipital strain were identified in the study as including intrauterine malposition of the fetus, the use of forceps or vacuum extraction during the birth process, prolonged labor and multiple fetuses (twins, triplets, etc.). The incidence of these risk factors in affected infants varied significantly from the established normal birth statistics.

According to the authors of this study, the pathogenic importance of asymmetric posture in infants and young children is often disregarded, with the condition either being dismissed as unimportant or not recognized at all.

All of the subjects in the study were …
