MOVEMENT POTENTIAL

June 13th, 2016
BLUE SPINECHECKERYou should be curious about each and every one of your joints’ potential. I know this may sound like the opening to a marijuana horticulture book rather than from a Chiropractor, but as a movement specialist and enthusiast I’ve cross-pollinated into different modalities of movement over the past year and discovered some fascinating new insights…the most important being… optimizing the “potential of motion” of your joints and especially the spinal joints truly is a spiritual endeavor. Here’s what I mean.

In the past year my movement nutrition palate has exploded from hand balancing with Ido Portal’s crew…to becoming a beast, crab, scorpion, & ape with the Animal Flow peeps….to the human movement optimization FRC/ KINSTRETCH trainings with Dr. Andreo Spina and his ninja instructors… to another teacher training with alignment wizard and yoga physicist Alex Crow…to the weekly strength and conditioning programing by Danny Lesslie of Deuce Gym… to checking and adjusting the spines and extremities of the active lifestyle lovers of Los Angeles…and most importantly playing on the floor with my 6 and 3 year old nieces…..(wow that’s a huge run-on sentence).

My goal in studying with these masters of movement was to discover and uncover new ranges of motion and to increase my kinesthetic lexicon. After incorporating all of these different styles of movement into my personal holistic body-mind training program I began noticing some movement deficiencies along certain pathways that had remained dormant for years. This was absolutely fascinating as it gave me the opportunity to “clean-up” dysfunctional joints and weak/tight muscles. And let me tell you…When I find dysfunctional joints I approach the “clean-up” process targeted strategies like Harvey Keitel’s character Winston Wolf, “The Cleaner” from Pulp Fiction.

You need an optimal surplus of movement in order to move and perform. The problem is most people are living in deficit. They're bankrupt in terms of motion and then they're borrowing motion from other areas and that's causing injury. And it's not a matter of if they're going to have a problem it's a matter of when and how big.

When you improve the range of motion to your dysfunctional and deficient joints, watch how much better you move… …think… breathe…and  even relax. Probably the most important by-product of this work will be increasing your body’s innate ability to adapt to different stress loads. Your tissues won’t buckle. Your body won’t buckle. After all… it’s only when your tissues can’t handle the “stress load” that injuries happen.

I’m gonna warn you that this clean-up practice that emphases your movement foundation and fundamentals isn’t sexy when you watch the videos on Instagram or Facebook. What is attractive and sexy is you when you dedicate a portion of your “practice” to cleaning up your movement deficiencies to make sure you have the prerequisites to perform your movement demands so you can kick ass on the yoga mat, in the gym, on the surfboard, on the slackline, on the court, and most importantly at home.

So here’s the homework. Commit …

What Chiropractic Techniques are used at THE LIFE CENTER? The Brook Method

March 23rd, 2012
In order to customize the right technique for each person Dr. Jeremy Brook studied with several chiropractic masters. The list below is a brief explanation of the techniques he uses to adjust and correct one's subluxations. PALMER METHOD This will involve any of a number of specific adjusting techniques, such as full spine, gonstead, & HIO, with the addition of a philosophy which emphasizes  the role of the Innate Intelligence of the body in the healing process.  It will not utilize any therapy other than hand adjustment. THOMPSON A specific technique for adjustment of the full spine on a special table which has a slight drop in the cushions to improve the effectiveness of the adjustment without as much force into the patient. GONSTEAD A specific method for full spine adjusting utilizing the use of full spine x-rays to locate spinal mis-alignments. HIO -- hole in one AKA Toggle Recoil A specific adjustment of the upper cervical spine... the upper part of the neck, closest to the brain.This technique utilizes a side posture table with a cervical head piece which makes a slight drop when the adjustment is given. MLS Developed by my mentor Dr. Arno Burnier. It is an advanced technique that involves visulization, motion palpation, and advanced delicate adjusting. MOTION ANALYSIS (PALPATION) An examination procedure used to test the mobility of spinal joints by feeling for movement between the vertebra. ACTIVATOR It is a small had held impact tool in which a quick impulse is applied to correct a vertebral mis-alignment according to a set pattern. LOGAN A non-force technique taught by Logan Chiropractic College, which utilizes a soft steady pressure on ligaments around the tail bone for release of tension and vertebral mis-alignments in the lower back.…

THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF MOST PROBLEMS IS A POWER PROBLEM

February 21st, 2011
The Vertebral Subluxation Complex is the underlying cause of many health problems.

Vertebral

Ver-te-bral Concerning the vertebral bones of the spine.

Subluxation

Sub-lux-a-tion Less than a complete dislocation of a joint with nervous system interference

Complex

Com-plex More than one part

Nervous System Function

When there is no interference, your nervous system controls the healthy function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. A subluxation, or the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, is a serious condition identified by its five parts:

* Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones:

(Spinal Kinesiopathology) The bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position. This can restrict your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.

* Abnormal nervous system function:

(Neuropathophysiology) Improper spinal function can choke, stretch, or irritate delicate nerve tissue. The resulting nervous system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body

* Abnormal muscle function:

(Myopathology) Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm.. The resulting scar tissue can change muscle tone, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.

* Abnormal soft tissue function:

(Histopathology) A rise in temperature from an increase in blood or lymph supply can result in swelling and inflammation.. Discs can bulge, herniate, tear; or degenerate. Other soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.

* Abnormal function of the spine and body:

(Pathophysiology) Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints.. This spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to fail.

What’s the cause?

Subluxation, or more precisely, the Vertebral subluxation Complex, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position from stress, trauma or chemical imbalances.   Automobile collisions, improper lifting, drugs, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances, and long periods of sitting can all cause the Vertebral subluxation Complex.   Instead of just treating your symptoms, your chiropractor is primarily interested in detecting, reducing, and correcting the Vertebral subluxation Complex.…

THE LARGEST NERVE IN THE BODY CAN BE A PAIN IN THE A*S!

February 15th, 2011

Did you know the largest nerves of the body start in the low back? They do and it's called the famous sciatic nerve!

Each of the two sciatic nerves is formed by four or five nerves branching off the spinal cord and running down the back of each leg. Sciatica is a severe pain in the leg caused from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

An all-too-common health complaint.

The sciatic nerves are the largest and longest nerves of the body, reaching about the size of your thumb in diameter and running down the back of each leg. When these nerves are irritated or affected by the inflammation of nearby soft tissues, doctors refer to this as sciatica. One of the most common causes of sciatic leg pain is the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. It can be accompanied by the bulging or herniation of the soft pulpy discs which separate each spinal bone. This can irritate or put pressure on the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spinal cord. The result can be an intense pain shooting down either or both legs. In the past, treatment has involved pain medications, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, and even surgery which is only about 60% successful. The chiropractic approach is to use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the interference from spinal structures. These chiropractic "adjustments" are very effective in reducing nerve irritation and its associated pain. Sciatica, like other health problems that can be traced to the spine, often responds dramatically to the restoration of normal spinal function through chiropractic care. Pain is caused when the sciatic nerve roots are irritated, scraped, twisted, stretched or pinched as they exit the spine. Causes of the impairment may be chemical, physical or the emotional stress of everyday living. A full-blown sciatic flare-up can involved the entire sciatic nerve path resulting in symptoms of lower back pain, burning, cramping or numbness that radiates into the thighs, legs, ankles, feet and toes. Pain may also be limited to various points along the nerve such as the buttocks, knee are and calf.…

Spinechecker’s Hot Flash… Mystical States of Alignment

February 2nd, 2011
Greetings Friend, How do we take something that’s known and place it in the center of our consciousness and culture? I’m taking about optimal health, alignment, balance, strength, flexibility, performance and potential. As we move through the first few weeks of January, I found myself contemplating our current health consciousness which is in a state of crises. I couldn’t help but think we could be doing things better and more efficiently. Unless we are in some kind of mystical state, our focus or consciousness isn’t strongly attached to our core or our health consciousness. Pain or illness does an amazing job at getting us mystical and reconnected to our core. When your back “goes out on you” and sends you to the floor due to physical, emotional, or chemical stress, you’ll do whatever it takes to stand up. And once you stand up….take a stand and make yourself stronger than ever before so you minimize the chance of buckling again so you can perform at your best. A mystical shift occurs as you move toward strengthening and connecting to your core. When you visualize the “best version of you,” a trajectory is formed to help you see where you are and where you need to go. You may be asking yourself, “What are the steps that form this trajectory from where I am to where I desire to go?” Innately you have the answer. Normally it comes during random periods. For me it happens after a chiropractic adjustment, a yoga class, during or after mediation, or during a quiet moment while walking on the beach. You’ll sense a spark or a “hit” of that something special. The key is to act upon “that hit.” That’s how you progress along the trajectory of health. When you get the “hit,” step back and ask yourself why you aren’t expressing yourself maximally. Look at the 3 T’s: Past and current TRAUMAS, TOXINS, and negative THOUGHTS. Examine your habits. Visualize yourself in a misaligned state and then in an aligned state. The aligned state is the “gold standard” at the end of your trajectory. This is such a deep spiritual practice that will help propel you toward achieving your health and life goals. Most of us have a spiritual resistance to bad habits. Most of us know that eating chicken nuggets from a restaurant at the airport will probably make us sicker than healthier. When the urge to break one of the commandments of health rises, STOP, DROP, & ROLL. Or maybe take a breath and do 10 funky chicken movements with your neck. Resist the urge to do something that will move you toward your “aluminum standard” instead of the “gold standard.” Your journey to wellness doesn’t have to be a struggle. You don’t have to be a Spartan Warrior or monk from the Himalayas. It can be fun as well as transforming. All you require is a vivid visualization of who you want to be and the will power and courage to…

Why the Spine?

July 23rd, 2010

So......why do chiropractors focus on the spine, and what does the spine have to do with innate intelligence and fulfilling your potential in life? Well, as it turns out, a lot. The spine is made up of 24 bones which cover and protect your 'communication superhighway' - the spinal cord. It is via this neural network that your innate intelligence informs and coordinates the delicate dance which we call life. Your chiropractor strives to optimize your spinal and nervous system function so that you can accurately interpret, and then appropriately respond to your life's calling. In pursuing this purpose your chiropractor uses natural, safe, and carefully administered techniques structured and individualized to your personal physiology. If you are already health conscious you will be aware of the important role of many aspects of the chiropractic lifestyle. You will likely know that regular exercise, a good diet, minimizing stress and maintaining a balanced mental attitude are all important for achieving and sustaining your best. You should also know about that important part of the equation upon which all others depend.......the nervous system. The nervous system is the master control system to all cells, tissues and organs in the body. The health and proper function of your spine is essential to this system. The other components of the chiropractic lifestyle are obviously best pursued when spinal and nervous system function are at their best.…
